Transforming Your Relationship with Food: A Success Story

Background: A woman in her 30s, sought help from our Gold Coast Dietitain with weight management after years of struggling with a poor relationship with food and a history of disordered eating. Despite repeated attempts to lose weight, she found herself stuck in a cycle of under-eating and overly restrictive habits, which led to low energy levels, a slowed metabolism, and difficulty staying motivated to exercise.

Challenges Identified: Through our initial assessment, we uncovered that her restrictive eating patterns were counterproductive. Her body had adapted to the calorie deficit, making weight loss more challenging and leaving her feeling fatigued. She also struggled with motivation to exercise, which added to her frustration.

The Plan: Together, we developed a personalised approach to support her goals. This included:

  • A Balanced Meal Plan: Designed to meet her nutritional needs while creating a small, gentle caloric deficit to encourage gradual weight loss.
  • Portion guidance: helping her establish a healthy and sustainable eating pattern.
  • Exercise Goals: encouraging achievable changes, like adding 1-2 walks per week, to improve her activity levels and overall energy.

Results and Progress: After a few weeks, the client reported feeling more positive and energised. She enjoyed her new routine and found it easier to stay motivated. Adding regular walks also boosted her confidence and sense of accomplishment.

Addressing Disordered Eating Patterns: Building on this progress, we explored some of her disordered eating habits and thought patterns. Her history of dieting had left her feeling out of control around certain foods, which impacted her confidence. Together, we:

  • Identified these “fear foods.”
  • Used nutrition education to reframe her thinking about these foods.
  • Developed a clear plan to reintroduce them in a mindful and controlled way.

Although she was hesitant, she decided to try this approach with our support.

Empowering Change: Much to her surprise, she discovered that these foods were not as overwhelming as she feared. By reintroducing them mindfully, she:

  • Enjoyed these foods without feeling out of control.
  • Recognised her natural cues for satisfaction and stopped eating when full.
  • Felt less drawn to these foods over time, finding it easier to stick to her meal plan while allowing occasional treats.

This experience was transformative, boosting her confidence and encouraging her to reintroduce more previously avoided foods. She now savours treats mindfully, enjoying them in moderation without guilt or secrecy.

Outcome: By addressing both her physical and emotional needs, the client achieved a healthier relationship with food and sustainable weight management. She felt empowered, confident, and motivated to continue her journey.
